Adaptability of lettuce cultivars to planting in no-tillage on straw of Urochloa ruziziensis PAB
Hirata,Andréia Cristina Silva; Hirata,Edson Kiyoharu; Camara,João Augusto Rizzo.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the adaptability of different lettuce (Lactuca sativa) cultivars grown in no-tillage on straw of ruzi grass (Urochloa ruziziensis), as well as its effects on soil temperature and weed control, in successive cultivations in the summer. The treatments were carried out in a randomized complete block design, with four replicates, in a split-plot arrangement (2x4), in which soil management (no-tillage on ruzi grass and convention tillage) was the main plot, and the different crisphead lettuce cultivars (Amanda, Solaris, Vanda, and Vera), the subplots. No difference was observed between cultivars for soil management. No-tillage reduced the soil temperature by up to 3.7°C and weed density by 3.7 times, in...

Adoption of Soil Conservation Practices in Olive Groves: The Case of Spanish Mountainous Areas AgEcon
Calatrava-Leyva, Javier; Franco, Juan Agustin; Gonzalez-Roa, Maria del Carmen.
This paper presents some results from a survey carried out in 2004 among 223 olive tree farmers from mountainous areas in the Spanish Southern provinces of Granada and Jaen regarding the adoption of soil conservation and management practices. Olive tree groves in mountainous areas are subject to a high risk of soil erosion and have to incur in higher costs of soil conservation. This results in greater difficulties to comply with cross-compliance and to benefit from agri-environmental schemes. Our main objectives are to analyse the current level of adoption of soil conservation practices and to analyse which socio-economic and institutional factors determine such adoption. Three Probit models are estimated. Dependant variables are three different soil...

Assessing rainfall erosivity indices through synthetic precipitation series and artificial neural networks Anais da ABC (AABC)
CECíLIO,ROBERTO A.; MOREIRA,MICHEL C.; PEZZOPANE,JOSé EDUARDO M.; PRUSKI,FERNANDO F.; FUKUNAGA,DANILO C..
The rainfall parameter that expresses the capacity to promote soil erosion is called rainfall erosivity (R), and is commonly represented by the indexes EI30 and KE>25. The calculations of these indexes requires pluviographical records, that are difficult to obtain in Brazil. This paper describes the use of synthetic rainfall series to compute EI30 and KE>25 in Espírito Santo State (Brazil). Artificial neural networks (ANNs) were also developed to spatially interpolate R values in Espírito Santo. EI30 and KE>25 indexes values were close to those calculated on a homogeneous area according to the similarity of rainfall distribution; indicating the applicability of the use of synthetic rainfall series to estimate the R factor. ANNs had a better...

Assessment of soil erosion in olive orchards (Olea europaea L.) under cover crops management systems in the tropical region of Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Beniaich,Adnane; Silva,Marx Leandro Naves; Guimarães,Danielle Vieira; Bispo,Diêgo Faustolo Alves; Avanzi,Junior Cesar; Curi,Nilton; Pio,Rafael; Dondeyne,Stefaan.
ABSTRACT In the tropics, water erosion is one of the most important factors leading to the degradation and deterioration of agricultural land. Olive orchards have a low canopy coverage, especially during the first years after planting, due to the low density of olive trees. Given the fast expansion of olive orchards in Brazil, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of cover vegetation on soil and water losses under natural rainfall. In addition, it was assessed the crop performance and the vegetation cover index in different management systems in olive orchards. The study was carried out in soil erosion plots, where water and sediment were sampled and measured over two crops season, under the following treatments: in the first season, bare soil with olive...

Carbon stocks of an Oxisol after thirty-eight years under different tillage systems AGRIAMBI
Magalhaes,Sulamirtes S. de A.; Ramos,Fabricio T.; Weber,Oscarlina L. dos S..
ABSTRACT Soil carbon (C) stock determination can subsidize discussions on the continuity of an agricultural management. This study aimed to evaluate the stocks of total organic C (STOC) and labile C (SLC), and the indices of C lability (CLI), C compartment (CCI) and C management (CMI), and correlate them with chemical and physical attributes of a Red Yellow Latosol (Oxisol) managed for 38 years with different tillage systems in a Cerrado region of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected in three layers (0-0.05, 0.05-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m). The CMI (CLI x CCI) showed higher STOC possibly as the tillage depth decreased, because none of the tillage systems conserved STOC and SLC in the layers of 0-0.05 and 0.05-0.10 m,...

Cost-Responsiveness of Conservation Practice Adoption: A Revealed Preference Approach AgEcon
Lichtenberg, Erik.
While there is current interest in reorienting agricultural policy toward environmental and resource conservation goals, relatively little is known about the influence of cost on conservation adoption decisions or about how farmers combine multiple practices into an overall conservation package. Using farmer survey data combined with information on standard unit installation costs, this study estimates latent demand models for seven on-farm conservation practices. All of the practices exhibit downward-sloping demand. Topographical variations in adoption conform to expectations. The estimation results suggest that cost sharing should have substantial effects on the adoption of several practices, and indicate strong complementarity among others.

Effect of 15n-labeled hairy vetch and nitrogen fertilization on maize nutrition and yield under no-tillage¹ Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida Acosta,José Alan de; Amado,Telmo Jorge Carneiro; Neergaard,Andreas de; Vinther,Mads; Silva,Leandro Souza da; Silveira Nicoloso,Rodrigo da.
This study evaluated the effect of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth) as cover crop on maize nutrition and yield under no tillage using isotope techniques. For this purpose, three experiments were carried out: 1) quantification of biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in hairy vetch; 2) estimation of the N release rate from hairy vetch residues on the soil surface; 3) quantification of 15N recovery by maize from labeled hairy vetch under three rates of mineral N fertilization. This two-year field experiment was conducted on a sandy Acrisol (FAO soil classification) or Argissolo Vermelho distrófico arênico (Brazilian Soil Classification), at a mean annual temperature of 18 ºC and mean annual rainfall of 1686 mm. The experiment was arranged in a double split-plot...

Effects of erosion and deposition on particle size distribution of deposited farmland soils on the chinese loess plateau Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Zhao,Pei; Shao,Ming An; Omran,Wail; Amer,Abdel-monem Mohamed.
Particle size distribution (PSD) in the soil profile is strongly related to erosion, deposition, and physical and chemical processes. Water cycling and plant growth are also affected by PSD. Material sedimented upstream of the dam constructions formed large areas of deposited farmland (DF) soils on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP), which has been the site of the most severe soil erosion in the world. Two DFs without tillage on the CLP were chosen to study the combined effect of erosion and check dams on PSD. Eighty-eight layers (each 10 cm thick) of filled deposited farmland (FDF) soils and 22 layers of silting deposited farmland (SDF) soils of each studied soil profile were collected and 932 soil samples were investigated using laser granulometry. The...

Effects of Participation in Organic Markets and Farmer-based Organizations on the Adoption of Soil Conservation Practices among Small-scale Farmers in Honduras AgEcon
Wollni, Meike; Lee, David R.; Thies, Janice E..
Conservation agriculture is often perceived to provide “win-win” outcomes for farmers leading to reduced erosion and off-site sedimentation, as well as improved soil fertility and productivity. However, adoption rates for conservation agriculture in many regions of the world remain below expected levels. This paper looks at the effect of organic markets in providing incentives for farmers to adopt soil conservation practices. Farmer-based organizations may link farmers to these markets by helping them overcome information deficiencies with respect to production standards and consumer preferences. Based on original survey data from 241 small-scale farm households in Honduras, we find that both participation in organic markets and farmer-based groups have...

Effects of soil management systems on soil microbial activity, bulk density and chemical properties PAB
Valpassos,Maria Alexandra Reis; Cavalcante,Eloiza Gomes Silva; Cassiolato,Ana Maria Rodrigues; Alves,Marlene Cristina.
The objective of this experiment was to study the effects of soil management systems on the bulk density, chemical soil properties, and on the soil microbial activity on a Latossolo Vermelho distrófico (Oxisol). Soil samples were collected from plots under the following management conditions: a) natural dense "cerrado" vegetation (savanna); b) degraded Brachiaria decumbens pasture, 20 years old; c) no-tillage treatment with annual crop sequence (bean, corn, soybean and dark-oat in continuous rotation), 8 years old; d) conventional tillage treatment with crop residues added to the soil, and annual crop sequence, 10 years old. The continuous use of no-tillage system resulted in an increase in microbial biomass and decrease in soil basal respiration,...

Emissões de NO, N2O e CO2 em agroecossistemas do Cerrado. Infoteca-e
CARVALHO, A. M. de; BUSTAMANTE, M. M. da C..
ABSTRACT: In the last 30 years, the Cerrado Biome has suffered very intense conversion of its native vegetation into croplands (Brazilian Savanna). This habitat modification has contributed with 25% and 90% of the total CO2 and N2O anthropogenic emission respectively. Soil preparation (tillage and no-tillage), deposition of crop residues, cultivation of N-fixing species and nitrogen fertilization are management practices that influence trace gas fluxes from soil to atmosphere. Nevertheless, the interaction between such practices and NO, N2O and CO2 fluxes in the Cerrado region is still unclear. Raining events after the dry season results in NO and CO2 pulses. The interaction between nitrogen application-during rain events affects NO and CO2 emissions. The...

ENVIRONMENTAL AND ECONOMIC IMPACTS OF SOIL EROSION AND FERTILITY MINING IN NORTHERN TANZANIA AgEcon
Nkonya, Ephraim M.; Barkley, Andrew P.; Hamilton, Stephen F.; Bernardo, Daniel J..
This paper develops a soil conservation model that is relevant to smallholder farmers who apply little or no fertilizer. Empirical results drawn from northern Tanzania imply that, ignoring fertility mining problem in model specification leads to overestimation of profits for farms that apply little or no fertilizer. The model also shows that, the impact of output price on soil conservation efforts depends on the curvature of the soil erosion function.
